The cutoff phenomenon in finite Markov chains.

چکیده
Natural mixing processes modeled by Markov chains often show a sharp cutoff in their convergence to long-time behavior. This paper presents problems where the cutoff can be proved (card shuffling, the Ehrenfests' urn). It shows that chains with polynomial growth (drunkard's walk) do not show cutoffs. The best general understanding of such cutoffs (high multiplicity of second eigenvalues due to symmetry) is explored. Examples are given where the symmetry is broken but the cutoff phenomenon persists.

The cutoff phenomenon for ergodic Markov processes
We consider the cutoff phenomenon in the context of families of ergodic Markov transition functions. This includes classical examples such as families of ergodic finite Markov chains and Brownian motion on families of compact Riemannian manifolds. We give criteria for the existence of a cutoff when convergence is measured in L-norm, 1 < p < ∞. This allows us to prove the existence of a cutoff i...
متن کاملEmpirical Bayes Estimation in Nonstationary Markov chains
Estimation procedures for nonstationary Markov chains appear to be relatively sparse. This work introduces empirical Bayes estimators for the transition probability matrix of a finite nonstationary Markov chain. The data are assumed to be of a panel study type in which each data set consists of a sequence of observations on N>=2 independent and identically dis...
متن کاملTotal Variation Cutoff in Birth-and-death Chains
The cutoff phenomenon describes a case where a Markov chain exhibits a sharp transition in its convergence to stationarity. In 1996, Diaconis surveyed this phenomenon, and asked how one could recognize its occurrence in families of finite ergodic Markov chains. In 2004, the third author noted that a necessary condition for cutoff in a family of reversible chains is that the product of the mixin...
متن کاملCutoff Phenomena for Random Walks on Random Regular Graphs
The cutoff phenomenon describes a sharp transition in the convergence of a family of ergodic finite Markov chains to equilibrium. Many natural families of chains are believed to exhibit cutoff, and yet establishing this fact is often extremely challenging. An important such family of chains is the random walk on G(n, d), a random d-regular graph on n vertices. It is well known that the spectral...
متن کاملCharacterization of cutoff for reversible Markov chains
A sequence of Markov chains is said to exhibit cutoff if the convergence to stationarity in total variation distance is abrupt. We prove a necessary and sufficient condition for cutoff in reversible lazy chains in terms of concentration of hitting time of certain sets of large stationary measure. (Previous works of Aldous, Oliviera, Sousi and the speaker established a less precise connection be...
